The Kent Police Roads Policing Unit caught a driver of a down-plated 7.5 tonne unit using WhatsApp in an overloaded vehicle. The driver thought he could get away with leaving WhatsApp voice messages and driving a van with welterweight which were actually heavyweight plates

The local enforcement officers spotted the downplated 7.5t vehicle and escorted the driver for further examination. Upon further inspection, it was found that the vehicle had heavier plates than what was expected, leading to an offence of excess weight being added onto the list of offences committed by the driver. Axles 1 was 5.2 % overweight, leading to a gross overweight by 36.5%

GFPN (Graduated Fixed Penalty Notice) was issued for both offences and the excess weight was asked to be removed from the vehicle as per regulations. This case serves as a stern warning to all drivers out there that breaking road regulations will not be tolerated in any way and those who are caught doing so will be penalised accordingly

It is advised that all drivers take extra care when on roads to ensure their vehicles abide by all necessary road regulations. Companies should also carry out periodic reviews and checks of their vehicles’ condition to make sure they are compliant with relevant rules and regulations at all times so as to avoid getting into any trouble with local authorities or law enforcement agencies. Following road safety protocols is essential for everyone’s safety on roads, so please take extra caution when travelling!
