The Greater Manchester Police (GMP) stopped a van on the M56 close to Manchester Airport. After weighing the vehicle, it was found to be dangerously overloaded, without even an insurance. The driver was also disqualified, arrested and charged to court for disco driving, no insurance and issued £700 in GFPNs for weight offences.
The vehicle was caught by the Commercial Vehicle Unit of GMP. On weighing the van was found to be 15.5% overweight on rear axle, 8.9% overweight on front axle and 29.5% gross overweight. Driving after being disqualified, with no insurance, the driver was arrested and issued with £700 fines in GFPN.
The implications of being stopped by police while driving an overloaded vehicle are serious and can have legal consequences such as a fine or even disqualification or imprisonment depending on the severity of the offence. Not only this but there are also potential risks associated with overloading vehicles such as reduced braking performance, increased wear and tear to tyres/suspension components and potential failure of other parts due to strain caused by too much load weight.
Drivers should always make sure that they know their vehicle’s limits before setting off each time they drive; otherwise they may find themselves facing hefty fines or even disqualification or imprisonment if caught by police! As this story shows it pays for drivers and companies alike to be aware of the consequences that come with overloading a vehicle – regardless of whether intentional or accidental!
