To keep the roads safe, the Roads Policing Unit of Merseyside (RPU), Liverpool checks trucks for weight violations. Recently, they took a truck to Switch Island for a weight check that appeared to be overweight.
The curb weight of the truck was determined to be 29% over gross weight, and nearly 20 percent on each axle. The driver was fined £800 and the vehicle was cabled until unloaded.
Similar to the above incident, Merseyside RPU stopped a scaffolding truck on Dork Road, Wirral after being sighted carrying an insecure load.
On weighing the load, it was also 32% overweight. The driver was reported.
Merseyside RPU warns people that the loads must be securely fastened and within the permitted weight the vehicle can carry.
Overloading a vehicle is an offence under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. The maximum fine for an offence is £5,000 and 3 points on your licence. Continual offences can lead to a driving ban.
