Police in Devon and Cornwall caught four overweight scaffolding vehicles, using an unmarked lorry to spot driving offences in commercial vehicles. The overweight vehicles were in dangerous condition, unfit to be on the road.
The undercover police vehicle caught 40 driving offences in one week of travel along the A38 and M5.The truck, which has cameras and a police siren, gives cops an elevated seat from which they can observe into the cabs and driving seats of big cars. Roads policing officers teamed up with National Highways to work the lorry on main roads across Devon and Cornwall, including the A38 and M5.
As a result of using the truck, the team stopped 52 automobiles and discovered 38 infractions over a week’s time. Drivers were caught using cell phones and even seen in the car watching Netflix. Six of the drivers were discovered to be driving while distracted with mobile phones, six had no insurance and two were found to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The HGV operation is named Operation Tramline and began in 2015, when one tractor cab recorded over 5,000 infractions. Between 2015 and April 2022, over 28,100 offences were captured.
