When packing or loading cargo for a journey, and questioning if that additional box or items can fit in the back of your vehicle, it may be tempting to try squeezing it in. However, as Greater Manchester Police recently showed during their traffic stop on the M62, overloading your car is hazardous and unlawful. Always equip yourself with the knowledge necessary before travelling!
The Greater Manchester Police suspected a vehicle for being dangerously overladen, which after inspection ended up being so much so that its driver was not allowed to carry on with the voyage. According to the officers, the cargo weight was more than double what is allowable! The driver was issued two Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs), which are usually only given for minor infractions, such as speeding or public disorder; though, these tickets were issued as a consequence of the reckless endangerment caused by overloading a vehicle beyond its capacity.
Safety should always be prioritised when it comes to loading up a vehicle! Exceeding the maximum payload capacity listed in your vehicle’s manual can have hazardous consequences on the road, such as prolonged braking distances and impaired steering performance. Furthermore, you are more likely to be involved in a collision should you need to make quick changes of direction or apply emergency brakes. Ensuring all materials and items are safely secured in the car – both internally and externally – is essential to avoid disruption during transit or induce additional instability.
As you consider what to bring with you on your journey, keep in mind that if something looks suspect or off-kilter, it most likely isn’t worth bringing along. Before taking off, confirm that all items are stowed away properly and within regulation limits!
Save yourself from costly fees and penalties imposed by Road Policing Officers – if it doesn’t look correct, then chances are good that you’re in the wrong! Abide by simple instructions like those previously mentioned to ensure a safe driving experience for everyone. Safeguarding yourself while driving requires regularly monitoring overloaded vehicles – yours as well as everyone else’s. Therefore, remember to take these tips into account when organising your next journey!
