Recently, the North Commercial Vehicle Unit seized an enormous 18-tonne vehicle on the M25 motorway. The driver of the car was only licensed with a provisional Cat B licence and had been cited for a multitude of offences, leading to an enforceable prohibition on their driving hours.
While patrolling the M25 late at night, officers noticed something unusual and took action. Upon investigation, authorities discovered that the driver’s licence was provisional and thus not lawfully suitable to drive such a large vehicle weighing 18-tonnes. Without delay, the officers swiftly pulled over the vehicle and reported the driver for a multitude of offences, including operating without credentials as well as hazardous driving.
The North CVU is an organisation dedicated to improving road safety standards across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The authorities team up with other law enforcement to keep an eye on drivers who drive vehicles over 3.5 tons or need a trailer attached. In this case, it appears that their vigilance paid off as they were able to identify a potentially dangerous situation before anything bad could happen.
This seizure serves as a valuable reminder that it is essential for all drivers to adhere to their legal vehicle safety responsibilities. It is integral that all drivers are in possession of a valid licence for the vehicle they’re driving and familiarise themselves with rules and regulations specific to their route before taking off. Severe punishments such as hefty fines and even jail time could come into play if these regulations are violated. Companies who employ drivers must always ensure that their staff are completely trained and authorised before permitting them to navigate public roads. By doing so, they can help protect against similar tragedies in the future.
